ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Kiss by a Rose, reproduced from a painting realized in 2021, emerges from a recent body of work in which Negron’s androgyne figures are set behind the compositional spacer of a bar, bench or table; rendered in constrained palettes that further theatricalize these intimate mise-en-scenes. These flat frontal surfaces, along with the bodies of Negron’s subjects, become sites that are receptive to the artist’s instinct towards symbolism, thickening the tableaus with objects that impart meaning and contradiction. In Kiss by a Rose, a butterfly, nameplate necklace that reads ‘Mercy’, two upright roses and a recumbent rose annotate a wet kiss between the two figures, one whose eyes are opened and one whose eyes are closed. A selection of loaded miscelanea are on offer to influence how the exchange might be read.
For nearly two decades, the self-taught artist Jonny Negron has developed a visual language through drawing and painting that is concentrated on social intercourse. Born in Puerto Rico and living in Los Angeles, Negron’s work is grounded in animation and illustration and like these particular methods, Negron embraces pictorial flatness and an economy of messaging. Throughout his work, tacit allusions are made towards reverential and devotional painting, through Negron’s deployment of compositional structures and depth-perspectives that originate in Byzantium and early Renaissance painting. Ultimately, it is between these spacesthat Negron works: connecting a lurid lived reality, that is itself enmeshed with fantasy, with the abundant proliferate offerings of art history that provide evocative templates.
